Apprenticeship Levy FAQs

The Apprenticeship Levy is a UK government initiative that was introduced in April 2017. It mandates that all employers with a pay bill of over £3 million per year to contribute 0.5% of their income to the levy. The funds collected through the levy can be used to pay for apprenticeship training and assessment.

Smaller businesses with an annual pay bill of less than £3 million are not required to pay the levy. However, these organisations can still access funding for apprenticeship training, with the government contributing 95% towards training costs, and the employer covering the remaining 5%.

Individuals cannot directly access Apprenticeship Levy funds, but employers can do so by creating an account on the Apprenticeship Service website. The digital platform provides tools to find approved training providers, allocate funds, manage payments, and monitor the progress of apprentices throughout their training.

For individuals interested in apprenticeship opportunities, it's recommended to speak with your line manager, HR representative, or relevant personnel in your organisation's Learning and Development team. They can provide guidance on your learning needs, appropriate training courses, the application process, eligibility criteria, and connect you with an approved training provider to get you started.

The Apprenticeship Levy covers a broad spectrum of programmes at different levels, from intermediate to advanced and higher. This inclusivity ensures that businesses can find apprenticeship opportunities tailored to their specific needs and the skill levels of their workforce.

The apprenticeship levels adhere to a framework ranging from Level 2 to Level 7:

  • Level 2: Intermediate (equivalent to GCSEs)
  • Level 3: Advanced (equivalent to A-levels)
  • Level 4, 5, 6 and 7: Higher (equivalent to foundation degrees and above). Level 7 is equivalent to a Master’s degree.

The Apprenticeship Levy is a powerful tool for organisations prioritising workforce development. It offers employers a convenient and dedicated fund for immediate apprenticeship training. With a 24-month expiration period, these readily available funds provide an accessible resource for enhancing employee skills without tapping into separate L&D budgets. The Apprenticeship Levy stands out as a valuable mechanism, equipping employers with funds to invest in employee development, boost workforce capabilities, and address specific training needs.

Imperial College Business School, in partnership with training provider Corndel since 2019, offers a range of apprenticeship programmes designed for large and growing organisations seeking to upskill and develop their workforce. Our current programmes include:

We're delighted to learn about your interest in our apprenticeship programmes. The first step is to discuss this opportunity with your line manager or HR representative to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria and entry requirements.

Please note that our enrolment process involves direct collaboration with HR teams from larger organisations, allowing us to enrol cohorts of 15-20 learners at one time. This approach ensures that organisations benefit from the collective learning experience of larger groups.

If you've already started these discussions with your HR team, you can direct them to this form to set up a call with our team at Corndel. We look forward to supporting you in your professional development journey.
