Access to the building

Entry to the Commonwealth Building is restricted and requires an Imperial College London ID card and a door PIN code.

• NHS library users can get a College ID card allowing access to the Library in the Commonwealth Building (as well as all other Imperial College Libraries). To obtain this card register for library membership online, then visit the library where we will complete your registration and organise a College ID and building access from the Security Office.
• College Staff and students can apply via email to hammersmith.security@imperial.ac.uk in advance to request building access and a PIN Code on their IDs.

The Hammersmith Security Office is located on the ground floor of the Commonwealth Building. The office is open Monday to Friday 10.00 to 12.00 and 14.45 to 16.00.

On your first visit to the library without a College ID card (or with a College ID but without building access), please visit the Main College Reception desk on the ground floor of the Imperial College Translational & Experimental Medicine (ICTEM) Building. Reception staff will then let you into the ICTEM Building. Go to the 1^st floor and then across the glass bridge into the Commonwealth Building.

Reception is open:

Monday to Thursday 08.30 - 13.00 and 14.00 - 17.00

Friday 08.30-13.00 and 14.00-16.30

Outside of these times you will not be able to access the Commonwealth Building without an ID and PIN Code.

How to find us

The library main entrance is on the 1st floor of the Commonwealth Building.

During regular, staffed library opening hours access to both the main floor and the ground floor is via the library main entrance on the 1st floor. When the 1st floor is closed access to the ground floor is via the ground floor swipe door by the Security Office.

About us

The library is on 2 floors:

• Main floor (1st floor) - help desk, group study, books, print journals, printing and binding
• Ground floor - quiet and silent study, library training room, PC cluster (when not in use for training), printing

We have around 70 computers across both floors and wireless access is available throughout for College members.

Books

Our collection covers general medicine (including medical textbooks), nursing and professions allied to medicine.

When the main floor is closed you can return books using the book returns box on the ground floor.

Journals

All new issues are available online only. We no longer receive paper copies of any journals at Hammersmith.

Older medical journals in paper format (and not available online) are kept in our sub-basement stores. We collect requested items from these closed basement areas daily - ask at the issue desk or email hammersmithlibrary@imperial.ac.uk.

Some newer (1990s and 2000s) journal issues are on open shelving on the 1^st Floor and can be freely accessed by library users.
